An adorable Instagram video shows that Duke the Golden Retriever has a new morning routine — and surprisingly, it has nothing to do with breakfast. Instagram user @lifewithduke2025 shared the video, showing how the Golden Retriever is fidgeting in the next room as if he is on a mission, and starts “shopping” for a very specific item to carry around the house. And Duke does what made viewers immediately fall for him: he listens to his owner.

In the video, the camera captures the Golden Retriever hovering in the other room while his owner narrates every movement like a sports commentator observing a very determined player. The owner begins by wishing the dog “Good morning,” calling him out with, “Hey, Duke. Dukie.”
Meanwhile, the dog ignores her and goes about scanning the space, prompting the owner to explain that this isn’t random mischief: “He is very selective.” She explains that Duke “doesn’t take any random items,” adding, “he’s very intentional about what he wants to take” — and sure enough, the pooch disappears briefly, sniffs around off-camera, and then he trots back in with a book clamped in his mouth.
The owner narrates, “He took it off the shelf,” recognizing, “He’s got my book on the Beatles,” sounding equal parts shocked and amused. When Duke starts to nibble the cover, his owner steps in a firm but sweet tone, saying, “No, that’s mommy’s book,” before softening with, “You can borrow it.” Like a lot of Golden Retrievers, Duke seems to love carrying or retrieving things, likely preferring items that remind him of “his person” — the kind of “treasure hunting” that can be a comfort habit or an attention move.
